Hiking Mistakes

I live on the Westside and have been looking for a great, dog-friendly hike nearby.  A friend recommended Mandeville Canyon, so I decided to try it.  Dogs are allowed off leash and there is a free parking lot at the entrance.

To get there from Sunset take Mandeville Canyon Rd. North.  Make your first left onto Westridge Rd. and continue until the road runs into a parking lot.

First of all, this is essentially the black diamond of hikes.  Keep in mind, I do not work out and this killed me.  As I am typing this, I feel paralyzed from the waist down, haha.  It is about 8 miles total and we went on a really hot day.  I thought I was a good dog pawrent by bringing a bowl for Theo and a bottle of water, but I did not bring enough.

Here are some mistakes I made:

My friend who came with me wanted to go at 3PM.  This was a huge mistake because it was a hot day.  Dogs can overheat easily, so pawrents should go early in the morning or in the evening if it’s warm.  Theo could handle the walking but it was so hot, I was afraid he was going to overheat.  I had to carry him whenever I saw him panting.

Mistake #2 - I ran out of water before I was even done with half the hike.  One bottle of water is not enough for dog and owner on long hikes.

Mistake #3 - I went with a friend who works out daily.  She was trying to rush through the whole hike which was way too hard in the 75 degree weather.  The first time you try a new hike, you should go with someone who is willing to go at your pace.  Theo and I were dying!

I only got one picture because I was too hot/tired to focus on pics, but I will try it again when it is cooler and do a full review later on.

Don’t forget to check your pups for ticks after!

Ugh, It is Monday

This is how Mondays make me feel.  Sigh.

Happy Friday

I could not get out of bed this morning.  I have been working really long hours and haven't been sleeping well.  CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE WEEKEND!

Outdoor Adventures

My neighbor was out of town so I helped him out by watering his lush garden.  Theo had a lot of fun running around the garden while I was busy hosing the plants down.  If you look closely, you will see I got Theo a little wet... muahahaha

Theo's Treat Part Two

Yea!  The Wags Club posted more pictures of Theo and the other dogs playing.

Look at all those dogs! Theo was in heaven.

Theo's Treat

As a belated birthday gift for Theo, yesterday my parents bought him a day of daycare at The Wags Club.  He had so much fun.  Just look at that big smile on his face.  Love him!

Happy boy!
See how his ears are pulled back? He only does that when he is super excited!

More Boy

Boy is the cutest poodle of all time.  Seriously.

Favorite Celeb Pooch

Kelly Osbourne has rescued a Pom!  She already has one ridiculously cute Pom named Sid.  Kelly tweeted, “I got a new dog that I rescued, she's a pom that was pretty much kept in a cage for the past year! I can’t wait to meet her and make her happy."  She named her new dog Story.

Ah, I want another dog.

Favorite Celeb Pooch

I dedicate this post to my close friend Ashley, who loves HBO’s True Blood.  I present the cast of True Blood and their respective PUPS.

Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer are married and own two dogs together.  One is a 13-year-old Springer Spaniel/Border Collie mix and the other is a 2-year-old Catahoula mix.  Anna has said, “They (her dogs) love you unconditionally, and you have to actually take care of them and it makes you step outside yourself,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how tired you are and if you’ve been up until whenever, they still need to be walked and loved and petted. I think it’s good to put your own self in perspective.”

Here is Sam Trammell at a charity event.   This isn’t his dog, but they still look cute together.

Here is Ashley's love, Alexander Skarsgard and his dog, Kate.  I made his picture extra big (wink!).  There are few things more attractive to me than a man who takes his dog on a walk with a smile on his face.  Hot, hot!

Dog Clone

In 2009, Edgar and Nina Otto paid $155,000 to have their dog cloned.  Their dog had died of cancer in 2008 and, since he held such a special place in their hearts, they wanted him back.  They had their dog's DNA frozen before he passed.

I wish I had this option for Boy.  I know it isn’t natural, but Boy is truly a once in a lifetime best friend and I would do anything to have him around for a few more years.  He has the best personality and is so loyal and caring.

Tough Times

I found out recently that Boy, my first love, has cancer.  He has lymphoma.  He is 13 years old, and while I know he has lived a long life for a dog, I am still devastated.  His health has declined over the years, he can hardly see, is nearly deaf, and his legs shake sometimes.  Boy lives with his sister and my parents in Maryland.  Last time I was home, he tripped and fell over one step.  He had difficulty just climbing one step.  The memory still makes me cry.

He is currently on powerful medication and the lumps in his throat have dissipated.  My parents tell me he is doing better.  Unfortunately, the research I’ve done says the medicine is just a temporary fix and he doesn’t have more than a few months tops to live.  I will not be okay when this happens.  I’ve been really lucky that I have yet to experience real loss in my life.  I can’t imagine going home for Christmas, and not having him cuddle by my side.  How do people get over this?  Why can’t dogs live as long as humans?  Or at least 40 years.

Here are some pictures of my sweet, little old man:

His sister, Princess, is doing fine!

Breed Feature – English Bulldog

English Bulldogs are really adorable with their awkward gait, wrinkles and funny underbite.  Though they can look a little intimidating, they are one of the most gentle dog breeds.

Breed Specifics:
  • While they are cute, they are known to snore loudly so they aren’t a good dog for a light sleeper like me.
  • Average weight around 55 pounds.
  • Average life span is 8 years.
  • They make great guard dogs and are good with children.
  • Downside – you must clean inside their wrinkles!
  • Upside - Look at that precious wrinkly face!
