In honor of the Labrador Retriever, my friend Michele sent me pictures of her rescue Moe, who is part lab!  Isn’t he the cutest?

He is a Baltimore Ravens’ fan.

Breed Feature – Pekingese

The Pekingese has a cool background story and is even referred to as “The Lion Dog”.  The breed won at the last Westminster dog show.

Breed Specifics
  • The breed originated from China, is over 2000 years old, and has hardly changed in all that time.
  • Their flat face and large eyes are some of the breed's most obvious characteristics.
  • They have a muscular and durable body and their legs are bowed and restrict their movement.  Their gait may have been deliberately bred to prevent the court dogs from wandering in ancient times.  Crazy, huh?
  • Weight 7 – 14 lbs.
  • Not very active dogs so they are great for apartments.
  • They are high-maintenance to groom.

Runyon Canyon Hike - Review

Over the weekend, Theo and I hiked Runyon Canyon.  I’m a big sissy so I love it because it has huge, open trails.  You aren’t running around through trees getting attacked by bugs, snakes, lizards, etc.  It is a dry hike with views of the city and the Hollywood sign.  The best part is that everyone brings dogs and they are allowed to be off-leash!  They have a station at the entrance where you can buy water, fruit, or granola bars for one dollar.  Parking can be annoying on the weekends but I always find a spot eventually.  Go early or later in the day to avoid parking issues.

The hike is pretty hard and I was too nervous to let Theo off-leash while we climbed up the massive deadly steps.  One false move and I would have a pommy pancake.  The steps are the most intense part of the hike and go quite high.  I had to stop twice because I thought I was going to pass out.  However, on the way down I set him free and he happily stayed by my side.

There are always tons of dogs of all sizes so don't be afraid to bring your dog if he/she is small.  My dog is 5.5 pounds and he DOMINATES this hike.  Few things make me feel worse about myself than seeing tiny dogs zooming by, leaving me in their dust as I gasp and wheeze like a 70-year-old smoker through even the tiniest hills.  I've got to start working out more.

We went on a smoggy day so the pictures aren’t as nice, but some days you can literally see the entire city.  And if you’re lucky, you may even catch one or two celebs. I am still waiting for a Ryan Gosling sighting.  Sigh.

If you look close, you can see the Hollywood sign!

Ella Dish - Fab Collars and Leashes

Speaking of the trend-setting Rachel Bilson, her pup often sports the hippest leashes & collars.  Her dog has been seen wearing Ella Dish leashes.  They come in an assortment of marvelous colors.  I picked out a few of my favorites below.  I can’t stop spending money on my dog – ahhhh!

Another benefit to Ella Dish products? They claim to be nearly indestructible and have glow-in-the-dark quick-release buckles.  How cool!

These run at about $30 and up.

Downside: It is really annoying to navigate through their web site and if you want to purchase an item, it directs you to other sites.  And a lot of items are out of stock.

Favorite Celeb Pooch

Rachel Bilson is well known for her style.  But did you know she has a gorgeous mix-breed dog with the awesome name, Thurman Murmen?  Here are a few of my favorite pics of the inseparable duo.  Sometimes when she travels to NY, she leaves TM with her mom.  Apparently, she is such a crazy dog lady that she will call her mom to talk to him on the phone.  Love it!

Funny App

My dad was not too happy when I first announced I was getting a dog.  He knew it would be a big lifestyle change and a huge financial commitment.  Now he adores Theo and always asks me for pictures and updates.  He played around with an app on his phone and sent me these pics of Theo, hahaha.  Too cute!

My two loves (Theo & Boy) together

Breed Feature - Springerdoodle

Have you guys ever heard of a Springerdoodle?  Me neither!  It is a cross between an English Springer Spaniel and a Poodle.  My friend Lauren was kind enough to share these pictures of her puppy, Kate.  I love when pawrents give dogs people names.  Kate is so darn cute!

my favorite!

Theo’s Clues - The Monday Blues

Doesn’t this chair remind you of the one from the old TV show, Blue’s Clues?

Theo’s “Overcome Monday Blues” Tips for Humans With Office Jobs

1.       Coffee!  Must drink coffee.

2.       Music. Listen to your favorite jams to lighten the mood.

3.       Bring a delicious lunch you can’t wait to eat.  Or better yet, take a break and go out to lunch.

4.       Put a picture of your pup-spiration on your desk.  It might cheer you up after one of those deadly Monday morning meetings.

5.       Remember that some people are jobless and can’t afford to pay their bills.  Try to be grateful.

6.       It is only 4 days (36 work hours) until Friday!  YAY!

7.       How can humans buy puppies toys and delicious treats with no monies?  Get to work!

Should People Who Work Own Dogs?

Early this morning, I took Theo to the dog park.  The dog park always has a few weirdos.  Strangers will talk to you about the consistency of their dog’s bowel movements, weird habits they should never share, or just spout random unsolicited advice, all before you’ve even had your morning coffee.  An older woman struck up a conversation with me and asked what I do with Theo while I work.  I told her he stays in my apartment.  She literally made a horrified face.  As if I said I beat him.  I immediately felt ashamed and embarrassed.  I felt the need to explain myself further to this complete stranger.  I said, “Well we do walks every day, come to the dog park 3 times a week, and have weekly playdates with other dogs.  I don’t crate him and he uses pee pads so he doesn’t have to hold it all day.”  She still acted as if I was the most negligent dog owner.  I was at a dog park at 8:30 AM on a Friday!  If that doesn’t show true dedication, I don’t know what does.

How rude!  I can’t push that face she made out of my mind.  As if I don’t feel guilty enough about working and owning a dog.  Obviously if I had the choice, I would be with Theo all the time!  Are single professionals not allowed to be pet owners now?   Plus, this woman didn’t even know anything about me and was so judgmental.  I had wanted a dog for years and originally got Theo with my ex-boyfriend because his office was dog friendly.  I had never intended for Theo to spend 40 hours a week alone.  Circumstances change!  Since that relationship ended, I’ve done the best I can to give Theo the greatest life possible.  Dogs are expensive and I obviously need to financially support myself, and my dog, or we wouldn’t even have a place to live.  I hate when people make you feel guilty for being a working dog owner.  A lot of people do it!

The dog community forums online often cover this debate.  People are heated on both sides.  Some people believe if you are gone for more than 3-4 hours a day, you shouldn’t own a pet.  I believe if your dog is well exercised, fed, entertained, played with, and loved daily, then there shouldn’t be an issue with working and having a pet.  I also believe that some people should mind their own business.  : )

It is all about balancing.  Like this man with the sweet mullet.

Happy Friday

I can’t really complain because it was only a four day week for me (President’s Day was on Monday).  Don’t you just want to kiss this wushy-mushy wittle face?
